I have spent a lot of time talking to founders who are just starting out. They usually have a great product and a small team. But they often struggle with how to talk about their work. At the pre-seed stage, you do not have a huge track record yet. You only have your vision and a few early wins. I noticed that many people wait too long to think about their message. They think they need a big product launch first. But that is usually a mistake.
Start with your story
I believe the most important thing for a new founder is clarity. If you cannot explain what you do in ten seconds, you will lose people. I see founders get stuck using technical words that nobody outside their office understands. I always tell them to keep it simple. Talk like you are talking to a friend. Tell them what problem you are solving and why it matters right now. This is the foundation of everything else you will do.
Why early timing matters
When I look at strategic comms for pre-seed startups, I see it as a way to build trust before you even have a full customer base. It is about reaching the right investors and the first few employees. You are not trying to reach the whole world yet. You are trying to reach the few people who can help you get to the next level. I think it is better to be quiet and right than loud and wrong.
Focus on the right people
You do not need to be on every social media platform. You do not need a massive press release for every small update. I prefer a focused approach. Find the two or three places where your audience actually spends time. Go there and be helpful. Share what you are learning as you build. People like to see the process. It makes your brand feel human and real.
Final thoughts
Building a startup is hard enough without confusing your audience. I like to keep the communication side of things as easy as possible. You should focus on your product while your message works for you in the background. Commplicated helps you find that balance without making things more difficult than they need to be.
